Blending perfectly into the late summer and autumn landscape, the giant 2-foot plumes atop this red amaranth combine soft pistachio-green and bronze tones to create restful, airy beauty in the sunny annual bed. Perfect for cutting for fresh or dried arrangements, these massive blooms last for many weeks on the plant, delighting the songbirds who flock to feast on their seeds all fall.

‘Autumn’s Touch’ reaches 3 to 4 feet tall, with very large, handsome dark green foliage and thick stems that need no staking. The plumes arise in late summer and continue well into fall, even catching the first snowfall in some climates. The color shades from more intense green at the base to lighter celery hues and bronze at the tips. Unusual and so pretty.

This Amaranthus is easy to grow in full sun and any well-drained soil, even poorly fertile ones. It makes a fine planting for the rear of the annual border, and looks good silhouetted against brick or painted wood buildings. Or place it in the center of a bed, as a crown for the lower-growing varieties around it. Wherever you put it, birds will quickly find it, and flock to enjoy its goodness.

If you love Amaranthus, as we do, you might enjoy the traditional Love-Lies-Bleeding as a companion to ‘Autumn’s Touch’, or eye-catching Dreadlocks. Easy to grow from seed, this is a plant no garden should be without.
