Navigator Ornamental Pear Care Guide

Overview:
Navigator Ornamental Pear is a hardy, upright, ornamental pear developed for cold climates. It produces showy white flowers in spring, maintains a strong vertical form, and often bears little to no fruit (so its cleaner in landscapes). It also delivers attractive fall color (yellow to orange hues).

1. Planting & Growing Conditions

• Hardiness Zone: Zone 2 (very cold-tolerant)

• Mature Size & Habit:
Height: up to ~35 ft (under ideal conditions)
Spread: narrower than height; often ~12 ft in some listings, but others list up to 18 ft
Form: Upright / vertical accent tree

• Light Requirements: Full sun is ideal for best flowering and foliage display

• Soil:
Prefers average to moist (but well-drained) soils
Not super fussy about soil type or pH it tolerates a range

• Site & Placement:
Should not be planted directly under power lines without considering eventual height
Best placed where vertical structure is desired (e.g. as a vertical accent or in open landscapes)

2. Flowers, Fruit & Seasonal Interest

• Bloom Time: Spring; white flowers appear before or as leaves emerge

• Fruit: It produces small fruit (~1 inch) sometimes, but fruit is generally not ornamentally significant and often sparse.

• Foliage & Fall Color:
  Leaves: Dark green in summer
  Fall: Transitions to yellow-orange tones

3. Watering & Establishment

• First Year: Keep soil consistently moist (avoid extremes of dry or soggy) to help the root system establish

• Established Trees: More drought-tolerant, but still benefit from supplemental watering during prolonged dry spells

• Mulching: Apply a 23 inch mulch layer around the tree (keeping it a few inches from the trunk) to conserve moisture and regulate soil temperature

4. Fertilizing

• Use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring

• Avoid excess nitrogen (too much nitrogen can lead to vigorous vegetative growth at the expense of flowering)

5. Pruning & Maintenance

• Best Time to Prune: Late winter or early spring, before bud break (or once danger of extreme cold has passed)

• How to Prune:
Remove dead, damaged, or crossing branches
Thin interior branches to improve light and air penetration
Maintain the upright form by removing wayward or outward-leaning branches
Avoid heavy pruning late in the growing season

6. Pests & Diseases

• Being an ornamental pear, it’s subject to the common challenges of pear/ornamental trees:
  Fire blight (a bacterial disease)
  Leaf spots, scab, and rust
  Aphids, scale insects, or borers

• Preventive Steps:
Ensure good airflow by pruning and spacing
Avoid overhead watering during humid periods
Remove and dispose of fallen leaves or diseased branches
Monitor regularly and apply treatments (fungicides, insecticides) when needed

7. Winter & Cold Protection

• Very cold-hardy; usually no extra winter protection is required

• In exposed or young plantings, consider applying mulch to root zone or using wrap/protective guard on lower trunk to guard against frost cracks or rodent damage

8. Landscape Uses

As avertical accent or focal point in gardens
As a specimen tree in yards or near walkways
In urban plantings where space is limited but vertical structure is desired
Where spring flower display is desired without heavy fruit drop
