Organic Rutgers Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) is a vigorous heirloom annual variety known for its reliability, productivity, and high-quality meaty red fruits. In the vegetable garden, it offers a classic, generous presence with plants reaching 120 to 180 cm (4 to 6 ft) and numerous clusters of uniform tomatoes well suited to abundant summer harvests. Its juicy flesh, rich taste, and excellent balance of sweetness and acidity make it a versatile tomato, delicious fresh in salads, sandwiches, and slices, as well as in sauces, preserves, juices, and homemade preparations. Fruits usually mature about 75 days after transplanting.

Organic Rutgers Tomato should be sown indoors from March to April, about 0.5 cm (1/4 in) deep, at a steady temperature of 21 to 27C (70 to 81F). Germination usually takes 7 to 14 days when seedlings receive proper warmth and light. After the last frosts, hardened-off plants can be transplanted into full sun, in fertile, organic-rich, slightly acidic to neutral, well-drained soil. It also grows very well in large 40 to 50 cm (16 to 20 in) diameter containers. A sturdy stake or cage, deep and regular watering, organic mulch, and balanced fertilization support abundant production.

In the edible garden, Organic Rutgers Tomato is ideal for family vegetable gardens, edible landscapes, and food preservation projects where yield, flavor, and versatility are desired. Its high production allows gardeners to enjoy fresh fruits all summer while also preparing reserves for sauces and preserves. Basil, chives, and parsley are good companion plants, while rotation with other nightshades helps reduce certain crop issues. Its yellow flowers attract bees, bumblebees, and other pollinating insects, supporting good fruiting and beneficial biodiversity in the vegetable garden.
