Planting & Growing Conditions

• Hardiness Zones: 39
• Mature Size: 20 inches tall, 45 inches wide
• Sunlight Needs:
  • Part to full shade; morning sun with afternoon shade is ideal.
• Soil Requirements:
  • Prefers well-drained, loamy soil rich in organic matter
  • Soil pH: Slightly acidic to neutral
• Spacing: Space plants 34 feet apart to allow for proper air circulation and growth

Watering & Maintenance

• Watering:
  • Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged
  • Water deeply once a week; increase frequency during hot, dry periods
• Mulching:
  • Apply a 23 inch layer of mulch around the base to retain soil moisture and suppress weeds
  • Ensure mulch is kept a few inches away from the crown to prevent rot

Fertilizing

• First Year: Incorporate compost or a balanced, slow-release fertilizer into the soil at planting time
• Established Plants:
  • Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges
  • Avoid excessive fertilization, as it can lead to overly vigorous growth that may require more frequent division

Pruning & Maintenance

• Pruning Time: Late fall, after foliage has been killed by a hard freeze
• How to Prune:
  • Cut back foliage to about 2 inches above the soil line to prevent pests and diseases
  • Remove any dead or damaged leaves during the growing season to maintain plant health

Flowers, Foliage & Seasonal Interest

• Bloom Time: Early summer (June)
• Flower Color: Pale lavender
• Foliage:
  • Emerges blue-green with creamy yellow margins in spring
  • Transitions to green with white margins as the season progresses
  • Mature leaves are rounded with undulations and some cupping

Pest & Disease Management

• Pests: Susceptible to slugs and snails, which can cause holes in the leaves
  • Solution: Use slug and snail baits or traps; maintain good garden hygiene to reduce hiding spots
• Diseases: Generally disease-resistant; however, proper spacing and air circulation help prevent potential fungal issues

Winter Protection

• Cold Hardiness: Hosta ‘Orion’s Belt’ is hardy in zones 39 and generally does not require special winter protection
• Mulching: Applying mulch can help protect roots from extreme temperature fluctuations

Landscape Uses

• Shade Gardens: Ideal for adding texture and color to shaded areas
• Borders and Edging: Suitable for creating defined borders or edging along pathways
• Containers: Can be grown in pots or containers in shaded patios or decks
• Groundcover: Effective as a groundcover in woodland settings
