A water-retaining sponge for your soil! Unlike Perlite, which focuses on drainage, Vermiculite is prized for its accordion-like structure that allows it to absorb and hold several times its weight in water and nutrients. It then slowly releases this moisture and food back to the roots, providing a consistently moist and stable environment.

• Best For:
  • Seed Starting: A lightweight, sterile, and moisture-rich medium that encourages rapid germination and helps prevent “damping off.”
  • Rooting Cuttings: Provides the steady moisture and aeration needed for delicate new roots to form.
  • Moisture-Loving Plants: Excellent for ferns, peace lilies, and other houseplants or containers that require consistently moist soil (not ideal for succulents/cacti).
  • Raised Beds/Sandy Soil: Amending outdoor beds that dry out too quickly in hot weather.
• Key Actionable Steps:
  • How to Mix (Potting): Blend with peat moss and other components to create a custom, high-moisture potting mix. A common ratio for general use is 1 part Vermiculite to 3 or 4 parts soil.
  • How to Use (Seed Starting): Use 100% Vermiculite or mix with fine-grade starting mix. You can also sprinkle a thin layer on top of newly sown seeds to maintain consistent surface moisture.
  • Nutrient Buffer: It has a high Cation Exchange Capacity (CEC), meaning it helps the soil hold onto fertilizer nutrients (like Calcium, Magnesium, and Potassium) so they don’t wash away with watering.
  • Pro Tip: Moisten the Vermiculite before mixing it into soil or using it to prevent the fine, lightweight flakes from creating irritating dust.
